This organisation aims to promote better understanding of scientific issues by the general public in the UK and internationally, and to improve the profile of science in the day-to-day life of our culture

Specific Aims
1. To provide an assessment of the accuracy of scientific reporting in the media
2. To promote public understanding of the nature of science, and of scientific developments
3. To make practical recommendations to media organisations, aimed at helping to improve the quality of their scientific reporting.

Scope
Science in the broadest sense, including the mathematical, physical and biological sciences, and also such subjects as archaeology, natural history and technology at our discretion.

Activities
1. Maintenance of a web site with two components:

  • a continually updated site containing reviews of scientific reports in the media, from the entire range of outlets (television, radio, internet, newspapers, popular magazines, films etc). Reviews/letters to be posted on the messageboard following the agreement of three members prior to formal submission.
  • resource base discussing topical scientific questions; the nature of scientific research, etc., with our own news reports of scientific developments.

2. Communication with, and use of, media outlets in all available forms. Production of information resources for use in schools addressing the nature and goals of science as a whole
3. Pro-active dialogue with major policy-dictating organisations (government and media) in relation to the maintenance and reporting of scientific resources
